The Lovable Pandas in Japan

Japan does not have its own species of pandas but they do have gifts of pandas which has been customary between countries, specifically China. The latest news on the pandas found in a Japan’s Ueno Zoo is about what happened to them after the disastrous earthquake. According to the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, Bi Li and Xian Nu survived and were none for the worse.

These two pandas is part of a joint research project between China and Japan as part of an effort to save the species from extinction. They traveled to Japan early this year for a 10 year study program and when the earthquake occurred, the two pandas had to transfer back to China to a different zoo because their home in Ueno was severely damaged.

Pandas are known to live up to 25 years but because of hunting and loss of habitat the species has become endangered. This research program is just one of the efforts to save the giant pandas. The 2 5-year old pandas are expected to return to Japan as soon as possible.

Pandas are important to our eco system because without them eating bamboo which is their food source, there would be too much bamboo. This would cause a disruption and an upset in the balance. It may not be pronounced right away but eventually the effects will be too much to reverse.  Right now, an estimate 1,600 or less Giant Pandas exist in the wild. Much of this has to do with cutting down of bamboo, poaching, and natural calamities.
